Minister of Music

Buddy Nash

Buddy Nash has always had music as an important part of his life; then God began calling him to His service after he turned 40. This took him back to college to get a music degree. Buddy's background was playing piano and trombone, yet his life circumstance dictated that he pursue a voice major. The problem was that he didn't have any formal voice training and had never even been part of a school or adult choir. Buddy had no idea what a joyous new adventure the Lord had prepared for him! Since that start, he's sung in a wonderful choir at UNCC that even toured Spain and sang the High Mass at El Escoreal, a cathedral/monastery of Catholic pilgrimage in the mountains outside Madrid. He's sung in over a dozen operas, many in a named role, and he currently sings in the chorus with Opera Carolina, Charlotte's professional opera company. Buddy has been blessed to have had many Christian colleagues and intructors along the way to encourage and ground him.

Buddy feels so fortunate to be a church music director, charged to help lead in worship of God. While the preaching of His Word is of primary importance in how God calls His people to Himself, the longing we have for Him in our hearts is often best expressed with song. We need only look to the Bible's songbook, The Psalms, for our best examples. While Buddy finds it hard to choose a favorite composer, he respects and admires Johann Sebastian Bach immensely. Bach wrote the initials "S.D.G." on all his musical compositions. This stands for Sola Deo Gloria, Latin for "to the glory of God alone". Despite his outstanding skill, Bach always remembered his place and standing before the Lord.

Buddy has been married for 20 years to his wife, Barbara, and they have two children, Naomi and Nathaniel (Nate). He likes to hike, camp, and run in his free time. His favorite book lately is The Man Who Moved a Mountain (in our church library!) and his favorite movies are The Patriot, Braveheart, and The Majestic.

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." - Romans 8:28
